Pueden ser útiles por ejemplo para cartografiar la superficie terrestre, para estudiar el tipo de suelos analizando las variaciones gravitacionales etc.

"It will take about 100 minutes for MetOp to orbit the Earth. During the time it takes to complete one orbit the Earth has rotated around 25°, which means observations will be made over a different section of the Earth in each orbit. Different instruments have different swathe widths and therefore take different times to observe the entire Earth; however, all of the instruments will have achieved global coverage within five days. "
